Philadelphia Member Chapter Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
Introduction
The AIST Philadelphia Member Chapter Scholarships are intended to recognize and support students within the Chapter’s geographic area who are pursuing careers in engineering or metallurgy. These one-year awards provide financial assistance to students enrolled full time at accredited colleges, universities, or technical schools.
Available Awards
Each year up to two scholarships may be awarded:
- Up to one (1) University Scholarship of US$5,000 (one-year), and
- Up to one (1) College/Technical Scholarship of US$2,000 (one-year).
Awards will be granted according to the criteria established by the Scholarship Award Committee. If no qualified applicants in engineering, materials science, or metallurgy apply, the Committee may consider students in other majors closely related to iron and steel production.
Eligibility
General requirements
- Applicants must be accepted to, planning to attend, or currently enrolled full time in an accredited program at a college, university, or technical/trade school.
- The applicant’s permanent home address must be within the AIST Philadelphia Member Chapter area, or the applicant must be attending a college, university, or technical school located within the Chapter area.
University/College (Bachelor of Science) Scholarship
- Preferred candidates are Bachelor of Science students in engineering, materials science, or metallurgy curricula.
- If no applicants meet these preferred fields, the Committee may award the scholarship to students in other majors related to iron and steel production.
College/Technical School Scholarship
- Applicants do not need to be related to an active AIST Chapter member in good standing.
- A letter of recommendation from a counselor, teacher, instructor, or professor is required.
- The applicant must be accepted or enrolled in an Associate degree program in a STEM/STEAM field, or pursuing a degree/certification in a technical area related to manufacturing or maintenance.
Selection Process
Applications are evaluated by the Scholarship Award Committee, which is composed of:
- A Chair who is a member of the AIST Philadelphia Chapter,
- Up to four additional Philadelphia Chapter members, and
- The Chapter Secretary.
Terms and Conditions
1. Scholarships must be used for study at an accredited college, university, or technical program.
2. Recipients must begin or continue their studies in the fall term of the same year in which the scholarship is awarded.
3. The AIST Foundation will disburse the scholarship as a lump sum to the recipient’s college or university for deposit to the student’s account.
4. Any delays, interruptions, or changes in the student’s enrollment or admission must be reported immediately to the Chapter Secretary; failure to notify may result in forfeiture of the award.
5. Students are eligible to reapply annually for the duration of their education.
Required Application Materials
Submit the following:
1. Completed scholarship application form.
2. Current resume including work history, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, honors, and other scholarships.
3. One essay (500 words maximum) addressing:
- One accomplishment you have achieved as a student, and
- Your interest in and/or involvement with the steel and iron industry.
4. One letter of recommendation (from a counselor, teacher, instructor, or professor).
5. Copy of current transcripts (college transcripts if enrolled in college; high school transcripts if a high school senior).
Submission Instructions and Deadline
All application materials and attachments must be submitted by 30 April.
