History of the Margaret and Max Pumphrey Scholarship
The Margaret and Max Pumphrey Scholarship was created in 1980 by Max Pumphrey, a long-time and highly regarded teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools. Max taught at Whittier Junior High School, Park Elementary, and Lincoln High School and strongly believed in supporting students’ pursuit of higher education. A native of Clark, Missouri, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and spent many years serving LPS. Following his death in 1979, he established this scholarship in honor of himself and his late wife, Margaret. Their commitment to learning and assisting those in need continues to impact hundreds of Lincoln students who have received this award.
