Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society
Intro
One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction. In addition, a $500 travel reimbursement is available to the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting for the formal presentation of the award. The travel reimbursement will only be paid if the recipient travels to and attends the conference.
Purpose and Support
This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Larry Kaufman and his work in computational thermodynamics and its practical applications. It is supported by CALPHAD Inc. and the TMS Foundation. Scholarship donors include ASM International Boston Chapter, CALPHAD Inc., CompuTherm LLC, Sandra Kaufman, Zi-Kui Liu, Philip Spencer, and Spencer Group Inc. Eligibility
- Must be a student member of Material Advantage.
- Must be a full-time undergraduate sophomore or junior enrolled in a metallurgical or materials science engineering program (including minerals processing/extraction) at a qualified college or university.
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0.
- Immediate relatives of members of the funding committee or division are ineligible.
- Coursework submitted as part of the application must be relevant to the scholarship for which the student applies.
Application requirements and deadline
Submission Deadline: March 15 of each year
Applications must be submitted online; paper or e-mailed submissions and letters will not be accepted. To complete the application, upload the following:
1. Completed application form.
2. A personal statement (maximum 200 words, double-spaced) describing distinctive educational experiences (for example, special projects), career objectives, leadership roles, participation in a Material Advantage chapter, and community service.
3. Curriculum vitae or résumé.
4. An up-to-date academic transcript.
5. Three testimonials (references) from instructors, supervisors, or employers who can speak to your background.
Additional rules
You may apply for up to two TMS-sponsored scholarships in a single year, but a student will receive at most one award per year. If selected for multiple TMS scholarships, the student will be given the single award with the greatest monetary value.
