FMD Gilbert Chin Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society
Overview
One scholarship of $2,500 is awarded to an undergraduate student (sophomore or junior) whose studies focus on the synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials used in electronic, photonic, magnetic, and superconducting applications, as well as materials involved in packaging and interconnection within device structures.
About Gilbert Chin
The award honors Gilbert Chin, a native of Kwangtung, China, who was a leading physical metallurgist. Chin made notable contributions to the understanding and application of crystal plasticity and developed magnetic alloys for telecommunications. He served as director of the Passive Components Research Laboratory at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where his R&D work included optical fibers, electronic ceramics, and high-temperature superconductivity materials. He passed away on May 5, 1991, at age 56. At the time of his death he held 11 patents and had authored or coauthored more than 140 publications. He was elected a Fellow of the Metallurgical Society of AIME (class of 1981).
Award Details and Travel
