Acta Materialia Inc Undergraduate Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society
Overview
Two undergraduate scholarships of $5,000 each are offered for students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or for undergraduates who demonstrate a substantial interest in the materials field. In addition to the cash award, each scholarship includes an available $500 travel reimbursement for the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting and accept the award in person. Recipients must travel to and participate in the meeting to be eligible for that travel stipend.
What awardees receive
- $5,000 scholarship payment and a certificate.
- If the recipient attends the TMS Annual Meeting to accept the award in person, they will also receive the $500 travel reimbursement, complimentary student registration for the meeting, and a ticket to the TMS–AIME Awards Banquet.
Sponsorship and administration
These scholarships are funded through the generosity of Acta Materialia, Inc. and are administered by the TMS Foundation. Awards are being offered jointly by TMS and ASM. Material Advantage student members may submit this application through only one society each year.
About Acta Materialia, Inc.
Acta Materialia publishes full-length original research and commissioned overviews that deepen understanding of how processing, structure, and properties are related in inorganic materials. The journal seeks papers with high impact potential that address atomic/molecular and chemical/electronic structures, microstructure, and mechanical or functional behavior of inorganic solids at all scales, including nanostructures.
Eligibility requirements
- Must be a student member of Material Advantage.
- Must be a full-time undergraduate sophomore or junior enrolled in a metallurgical or materials science and engineering program at an accredited college or university.
- Relatives of members of the funding committee or division are not eligible.
- The coursework you submit must be relevant to the scholarship applied for.
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0.
Application instructions
Deadline: March 15 each year.
Applications must be submitted online; paper or emailed submissions and letters will not be accepted. To complete the application, upload the following:
1. Completed application form.
2. Personal statement (no more than 200 words, double-spaced) describing distinctive educational experiences (for example, special projects), career objectives, leadership roles, participation in a Material Advantage chapter, and community involvement.
3. Curriculum vitae or résumé.
4. Current academic transcript.
5. Three references (letters or testimonials) from instructors, supervisors, or employers who know your background.
Additional notes
- Applicants may apply for up to two different TMS-sponsored scholarships in a single year, but TMS will award only one scholarship per student per year. If selected for more than one award, the student will receive the scholarship with the highest value.
