Superalloys Scholarship

Scholarship Sponsored by Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society

Value: $2,000.00
Awards Available: 2
Deadline : Mar 15, 2026

Overview
Two scholarships of $2,000 each are available for PhD students whose primary research is in metallurgical or materials science and engineering with emphasis on superalloys. Each awardee may also receive up to $250 to help defray travel expenses; the travel payment is contingent on the recipient attending the conference where the award is presented.

Scope of research
Eligible projects include classical superalloy topics—such as alloy design, processing, mechanical behavior, coatings, and environmental interactions—as well as work on technologies that enhance manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, lifetime prediction, and overall performance of superalloys.

Presentation and conference attendance
Awards are typically conferred at the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) Conference. In years when the International Symposium on Superalloys is held, award presentations take place at that Symposium. Recipients receive complimentary student registration for the event at which they are presented. Applicants (including previous applicants) are encouraged to submit abstracts to both the International Symposium on Superalloys and the MS&T Conference. Awardees are also encouraged to participate in the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition and/or the European Symposium on Superalloys and Their Applications.

Funding and governance
This program is funded by the TMS Foundation and supported by the TMS International Symposium on Superalloys Committee. For additional details, consult the bylaws.

Eligibility requirements
- Must be a student member of Material Advantage and/or the TMS Graduate Student Program.
- Enrolled full-time as a PhD student in a qualified metallurgical or materials science and engineering program.
- Coursework and research must be directly relevant to superalloys.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Application instructions
Submission deadline: March 15 each year.

Applications must be submitted online; paper or emailed materials will not be accepted. Complete applications must include:
1. Completed application form.
2. A personal statement (maximum 200 words, double-spaced) describing distinctive educational experiences (for example, special projects), career goals, leadership roles, involvement in a Material Advantage chapter, and community activities.
3. Curriculum vitae or résumé.
4. An up-to-date academic transcript.
5. Three testimonials from faculty, supervisors, or employers familiar with your work and background.

Additional rules
- An individual may apply for up to two TMS-sponsored scholarships in a single year, but TMS will award no more than one scholarship per student per year. If a student is selected for multiple scholarships, the award with the highest value will be granted.
