Introduction
The Virginia High School League (VHSL), together with the VHSL Foundation, provides annual scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to continue their education after high school. These awards are intended to support Virginia students as they pursue post-secondary academic and career goals. Parents and students are encouraged to review and apply for these opportunities.
Key dates and submission format
- Applications for 2026 will open on January 1, 2026.
- All FY 25–26 submissions must be submitted electronically.

Eligibility (general)
- Applicants must be graduating students from VHSL member schools to be eligible for the scholarships described below.
- Nomination limits noted in each award section apply; contact your school counselor for information about being considered and nominated.
VHSL Foundation Achievement Award
- Award amount: $2,000.
- Number of recipients: 19 senior scholar-athletes and scholar-activity participants selected annually.
- Purpose: To recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence while participating in athletics and/or school activities and who will attend a post-secondary institution.
- Eligibility and nominations: Only seniors from VHSL member schools may be nominated. Each VHSL member school may submit up to two nominees per category, resulting in a maximum of 8 applications per school. Speak with your school counselor if you wish to be considered.
Vito Perriello Citizenship Award
- Award amount: $1,000 each; two scholarships will be granted during the school year.
- Purpose: To honor student-participants who have exemplified exceptional citizenship during their high school careers.
- Eligibility and nominations: Candidates must be graduating students from VHSL member schools and may be nominated by their school (each VHSL member school may nominate two students). Eligible students must have participated in one or more VHSL activities; this includes participation as an athletic training student aide (ATSA) working with a Virginia-licensed athletic trainer at the school.
- Deadline and selection: Applications must be submitted by March 1; late applications will not be accepted. A statewide review committee composed of educators and representatives from the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee will evaluate nominations and select the winners.
