Overview
The American Legion Skilled Trades Scholarship provides financial support to young Michiganders who are preparing for careers in construction/building, automotive, advanced manufacturing, or energy. The program targets students aged 17–21 who are enrolled in post-high-school trades training or apprenticeships, or pursuing a two-year college degree in one of these skilled trades (with state or federal certification as the end goal).
Who is eligible
- Must be a resident of Michigan.
- Must be between 17 and 21 years old at the time the application is submitted.
- Must be actively pursuing a skilled trades pathway via post-high-school trades training/apprenticeship or a two-year college program in a qualified trade.
- Preference is given to applicants who are descendants of veterans, though veteran lineage is not required.
Award details
- Two scholarships will be awarded in 2026.
- Each scholarship provides $1,000 per year for two years (totaling $2,000 per recipient over the two-year period). $1,000 is disbursed each year.
Permitted uses of scholarship funds
Funds may be used for:
- Tools, specialized clothing, gear, or safety equipment.
- Tuition, fees, and other expenses at a post-secondary skilled trades school, apprenticeship, or training program.
- Tuition, fees, and related costs for a two-year college skilled trades program.
Application deadline
All application materials and supporting documents must be received by April 3, 2026, to be considered.
Selection and award process
- Recipients will be chosen by the American Legion Department of Michigan’s Education and Scholarship Committee in coordination with the scholarship donors. Two $1,000-per-year scholarships will be awarded at the committee’s discretion.
- Payment will be issued as a check to the individual recipient, the educational institution, the training program, or the supplying business, depending on whether the funds are to be applied to supplies or to tuition. Receipts or proof of supply expenses must be submitted before funds intended for supplies will be released.
- The scholarship is valid for two years only. The second year’s $1,000 payment will be released only after the recipient provides first-year academic transcripts and verification of enrollment in a second-year trades program or college course, or proof of continued employment in the trade.
