Pittsburgh Member Chapter Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
Purpose
The AIST Pittsburgh Chapter Scholarships are intended to recognize and support local high school seniors or current undergraduate students who are pursuing careers in engineering or metallurgy. The award provides financial assistance for full-time study at any accredited college or university in North America.
Award
- The Pittsburgh Chapter will grant one (1) scholarship.
- An applicant may receive only one scholarship from this program.
Who May Apply (Eligibility)
- Applicants must be the child (including step-child, adopted child, or ward), grandchild, or spouse of an active AIST Pittsburgh Chapter member in good standing. For this program, a member in good standing is an AIST member who has been continuously active in the Pittsburgh Chapter for at least two consecutive years.
- Students who are part of the Material Advantage program at colleges within the Pittsburgh Chapter area are also eligible.
- The student must be accepted into, or currently enrolled in, a full-time program at an accredited North American college or university.
- Preference will be given to candidates majoring in metallurgy or engineering disciplines related to iron and steel production; however, qualified students pursuing other majors may also be considered.
Selection Process
- Applications will be evaluated by the Scholarship Award Committee. The committee is composed of a Chair (an AIST Pittsburgh Chapter member), up to four additional Pittsburgh Chapter members, and the Secretary of the AIST Pittsburgh Chapter.
- Awards are determined without consideration of financial need.
Terms and Conditions (Rules)
1. Scholarship funds must be used at an accredited college or university.
2. The recipient must begin the academic program in the fall term of the same year the scholarship is awarded.
3. The AIST Foundation will send the scholarship payment as a single lump-sum payment to the recipient’s college or university for deposit into the student’s account.
4. If the student’s enrollment is postponed or interrupted for any reason, the chapter Secretary must be notified immediately. Failure to notify or a significant delay/interruption may result in forfeiture of the award.
Application Materials (Required Documents)
All documents must be submitted as unprotected PDF files.
1. Completed scholarship application form.
2. An essay (choose one topic):
- Describe a student achievement. Explain the reasons for your success and how this accomplishment will shape your future plans as an engineer.
- Outline your main strengths and interests. Explain how you intend to apply these abilities in a career within the steel industry or in engineering.
- Analyze the major challenges facing the steel industry today. Identify opportunities where new graduates could help improve company performance within the sector.
3. Current resume listing work experience (emphasize internships or jobs related to the field), extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and any honors or other scholarships.
4. A recommendation or evaluation from a school counselor, teacher, or professor.
5. A copy of current high school or college transcripts.
