Scholarship Rules & Regulations
Overview
The Pasadena Strawberry Festival awards scholarships under the official name “Pasadena Strawberry Festival Scholarship.” These awards are intended for graduating high school seniors and qualified college students from designated schools and service participants connected to the Festival.
Eligible applicants
- Graduating seniors from the following high schools (or equivalent campus programs) are eligible: South Houston High School; Dobie High School; Sam Rayburn High School; Tegeler Career Center; Pasadena High School; Pasadena Memorial High School; Lewis Career & Technology Center; Deer Park High School; La Porte High School; returning students at San Jacinto College — North, Central & South campuses; and University of Houston–Clear Lake.
- Consideration will also be given to private-school and home-schooled students who reside within the district areas listed above.
- Current Pasadena Strawberry Festival volunteers who have accumulated 20 or more service hours and who are either graduating from high school or enrolled at an eligible college are also eligible to apply.
Award amount and use
- Each scholarship is $1,500.
- Funds must be used for tuition and textbooks.
- Scholarship checks will be issued to the college chosen by the recipient.
Special award
- One scholarship will be reserved for the winner of the Pasadena Strawberry Festival Beauty Pageant. The pageant winner’s award will be paid by check to the college they select.
Eligibility requirements
- High school applicants must have graduated from one of the schools listed above during the year the scholarship is awarded and must have earned at least a ‘B’ average (3.0 GPA).
- College-level applicants must provide proof of a 3.0 GPA; remedial courses are excluded from GPA calculation.
- All recipients must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 semester credit hours) and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- College recipients may apply for and are eligible to receive one additional scholarship.
Application requirements
Applicants must submit the following by the DEADLINE DATE printed on the application form:
1. Proof of U.S. citizenship.
2. A completed scholarship application.
3. An official transcript showing completed high school or college coursework appropriate to the applicant’s classification.
4. A typed essay (minimum 500 words) on either the Battle of San Jacinto or the history of the Pasadena Strawberry Festival.
5. A short statement (typed, no more than 100 words) OR a two-minute recording on a thumb drive explaining why the applicant should receive the scholarship.
Selection criteria
- At the time the application is submitted, the applicant must be enrolled full-time at one of the designated high schools or colleges.
- An official transcript demonstrating a minimum 3.0 GPA (B average) is required.
- The applicant should show involvement or interest in cultural, academic, or charitable activities.
- If applicants are otherwise equally qualified, financial need may be used to determine the award recipient.
Disbursement
Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the college the recipient will attend and will be issued in the recipient’s name.
