Leo Bourassa Scholarship

Scholarship Sponsored by Virginia Lakes and Watershed Association

Value: $3,000.00
Awards Available: 4
Deadline : Apr 01, 2026

Introduction
In 2001 we created the Leo Bourassa Scholarship to advance our mission by providing annual financial support to students pursuing studies connected to water resources. The award honors Leo Bourassa, the founder of the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association.

Award details
Scholarship funds are issued as a check made payable to the recipient’s college or university and may be used only for tuition or fees. Each year we typically grant multiple awards, with individual scholarship amounts generally ranging from $3,000 down to $500.

Selection process
Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement, demonstrated involvement in the water resources field, and related extracurricular activities. Applications are reviewed by the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association scholarship committee, which makes recommendations to the VLWA Board of Directors regarding the annual awards.

How to apply
Deadline: April 1 (applications must be submitted electronically through the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association website).

Required application materials:
- A description of your experience related to water resources and watershed management, including paid and volunteer positions.
- A list of clubs and organizations you belong to that are related to water resources, including any participation in Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association events.
- A personal statement explaining why you should receive this scholarship. Include academic background, work experience, educational goals, and planned career path.
- A copy of your current college transcripts (official or unofficial).

References:
- You must provide at least two letters of recommendation from non-family members. Applications submitted without the required recommendation letters will not be considered. Recommenders may mail their letters to the address listed on the application; letters must arrive by the April 1 deadline.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following:
1. Be a student in good standing at a Virginia-accredited college or university and be a Virginia resident at the time of application and award.
2. Have completed, or be on track to complete by the award date, at least two semesters of undergraduate study.
3. Be enrolled in a curriculum related to water resources as a full-time undergraduate, full-time graduate, or part-time graduate student. Qualifying areas include, but are not limited to: biology, conservation, ecology, engineering, environmental science, geology, hydrology, limnology, stormwater management, water quality, and wildlife studies.
