Overview
- The Georgia Press Educational Foundation (GPEF) is accepting scholarship and internship applications for the 2026–2027 academic year. All scholarship materials must be received by Feb. 1, 2026.
How to apply — Scholarships
- To be considered for a GPEF scholarship for the 2026–27 academic year, complete the scholarship application and send it to sireland@gapress.org by February 1, 2026.
- Download the scholarship form (Scholarship App 2026-2027) from the foundation’s materials on the website or from the button in the left column of this page.
How to apply — Internships (summer 2026)
- GPEF funds eight-week summer internships at Georgia newspapers for summer 2026. Grants are made to newspapers, which are responsible for hiring interns.
- Students interested in a funded internship should contact a specific Georgia newspaper near where they will live during summer 2026 to confirm that the paper is a Georgia Press Association member and plans to participate in the program.
- Alternatively, students may submit a student internship application to have it forwarded to all Georgia newspapers that receive internship grants. Download the student internship form (StudentInternApp2026) if you wish to use this option.

GPEF Scholarships (descriptions)
- Otis A. Brumby Jr. Community Newspaper Scholarship: Created in 2012, this annual award goes to a college junior or senior majoring in print journalism. Preference will be given to applicants from Cobb County. The scholarship honors Otis A. Brumby Jr., longtime publisher of the Marietta Daily Journal, Neighbor Newspapers and The Cherokee Tribune, a former Georgia Press Association president and the inaugural recipient of the David E. Hudson Open Government Award.
- Durwood McAlister Scholarship: Established in 1992 by The Atlanta Journal, this yearly scholarship recognizes an outstanding student majoring in print journalism at a Georgia college or university. It commemorates Durwood McAlister, a former editor of The Atlanta Journal.
- Morris Newspaper Corporation Scholarship: Founded in 1987 by Charles Morris of Morris Newspaper Corp., Savannah, this scholarship is awarded annually to an exemplary print journalism student. Recipients are selected by the Foundation.
- William C. Rogers Scholarship: Endowed in memory of William Curran Rogers Sr., long-time editor and publisher of the Swainsboro Forest-Blade and past president of the Georgia Press Association (as well as leader in national newspaper organizations), this award is presented to students attending the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
- Honor scholarships: The Foundation also administers honor scholarships established at the request of individuals or organizations. These awards may carry requirements different from the Foundation’s standard scholarships.
GPEF Scholarship Requirements
1. The applicant or the applicant’s parents must meet Georgia residency requirements: parents must have been legal Georgia residents for at least two years, or the applicant must have been a Georgia resident for at least three years.
2. Recipients must be undergraduate students enrolled at a college or university in Georgia.
3. Financial need must be demonstrated; family income is one of the factors considered.
4. Applicants must show a prior interest in newspaper journalism.
5. A recommendation is required from a high school counselor or principal, a college professor, and/or a member of the Georgia Press Association.
6. Applications may be submitted during the senior year of high school or at any undergraduate level.
7. Awards apply to the current academic year; applicants seeking consideration for a subsequent year must reapply.
8. Personal circumstances may be taken into account and could influence award decisions.
9. Scholarship funds are sent directly to the recipient’s college or university financial aid office and applied to tuition.
